Counselling is a therapeutic and intentional relationship. It is a way of addressing and resolving issues. Counselling is not advice giving. It can involve identifying options and choosing between them, learning new skills to cope better with problems, gaining greater understanding of what is occurring, or being supported while recovering from some significant life event.
Counselling is a collaborative process that involves the development of a unique, confidential helping relationship. The counsellor acts as a facilitator in helping clients to understand feelings, behaviours, relationships with others, situations, choices and decisions. Further, the counsellor offers a safe, confidential and non-judgmental context in which individuals can:
• Gain clarity and perspective on the issue;
• Receive the support they need to resolve issues and make decisions;
• Deal with negative feelings and emotions;
• Explore personal resources and develop new skills. .
Supportive counselling will empower your to consider the options and if necessary, make the changes to adjust the quality of your life or situation.
Counsellors also provide support in the form of information, workshops, advice, mediation and referral to a range of services.
At iWOMAN INTERNATIONAL® & iCONFIDENTIAL we believe the basis of all counselling is objective and supportive listening and respect for the client as an individual. Processing things previously put aside by the pressures of everyday life can be difficult, but the opportunity to explore your feelings in a private, confidential and non-judgmental atmosphere can be a relief in itself. Counselling provides an opportunity to gain new perspectives and can encourage a greater dimension of wellbeing.
Please note: Counselling & life coaching are by prior appointment only.
Counselling usually takes place on a one-to-one basis:
• A counsellor and client will normally sit with one another for an hour to discuss any relevant issues which are presented by the client.
• The counselling process involves a ‘getting to know you’ period just like any new relationship.
• The counsellor and client play an equal role in the counselling process. There is no ‘expert’ in a counselling relationship.
• The counsellor’s intention is to make the counselling process both safe and supportive.
